Ya know, when you think about it, really, the one who’s uncivilized and uneducated is the Pavanussian Azure, not the XO.
Look: if a bunch of us are at a table & all of us can speak Spanish save a guest who mayn’t have much knowledge of the lingo, it would be the uttermost in rudeness & incivility to continue speaking Spanish while the non-Spanish guest sits uncomfortably.
So it is here: the XO and most of the crew aboard the Bird don’t speak Pavanussian, merely Crosarti. The acting helmsman should’ve at least had the decency to continue while aboard the Bird to speak only in the lingo of the crew.
No wonder the Commander hasn’t much trust in anyone save her Admiral & a few of the Bird’s crew. She tolerates Kellin & Von Taeliac (from my view) because they’re the Admiral’s parents, nothing more.
So really Azure is the “uneducated country girl”, not the XO!

But seriously, what about the XO’s hostility? Doesn’t that count? You’re right-Azure’s been cooped up in a ship with a hostile 1st officer. She’s operating aboard a vessel whose crew’s main communication is in, to her, another language AND another & different culture.
But, on the other hand, even with Azure’s past, does it still merit hostility? Come on, T. She should at least try to work out something with the XO, shouldn’t she?
I’m just sayin’, is all.
As I said: I’m curious now as to how all this’ll play out.

If you recall, Ilyena was nothing but hostile towards Azure upon first meeting. Imagine that hostility never went away.
For six months.
While living on a very small ship together.
Azure may be a tad resentful. Especially once you learn a bit more about her background.
